I showed my quilt, The Residents, about some of the residents of Point Molate to some of the Point Molate residents. I hope they approve.
I’m honored to say that my first quilt will be part of the exhibit, Point Molate, thanks to ARTSCCC (Arts Contra Costa County) and Richmond Art Center. Richmond Art Center will host the exhibit from January 24, 2024-March 16, 2024. The reception will be on January 27, 2024, 2-4 pm at 2540 Barrett Ave, Richmond, CA.
Many thanks to Point Molate Alliance, Pam Stello, Jim Hanson, Tony Brake, Alison Young, and Kat Boyer for their expertise and guidance on some of the species to include in the quilt. Gratitude to Tony Tamayo for generously sharing what I used as a reference picture of Point Molate at a distance, Samuel Uzoma and Social Justice Sewing Academy for unknowingly inspiring, teaching, and influencing my decision to make this quilt, and Jenny Balisle for believing in my ability to turn something from nothing, for offering me this incredible opportunity. Last, but not least, I am so indebted to my sweet cat Pebbles who patiently accompanied me on the journey from the beginning to the end of making this quilt, lovingly curled up and napped in it during the process, and recently passed away at age 15.
I was/am unsure of its title. Maybe I should have called it Some Residents to be more accurate because I am nervous and anticipating critics call it inaccurate because it doesn’t include species x,y,z, but The Residents just stuck, so here we are. Complainers can make their own quilt and call it whatever they want. As the artist and the one who did all the work and every single stitch, I make the call.
Here are many process photos because I like to document my process. Tears and nervous second guessing not included, haha.
