I went to the first class of a seven class series on learning another pop song’s dance routine. This time it’s Beyonce’s “Run the World (Girls)”. To be honest, I didn’t recognize this song at all. I normally listen to NPR or my CD’s (and… yes, cassette tapes), so I’m really behind the times (except when it comes to the news) when it comes to pop culture. However, I do love to learn and to dance and without the pressure of whether or not I’m doing anything right, so these classes are perfect.

In the past, I’ve performed more traditional dances in more formal settings, but I’ve found that my self esteem goes down because I make a lot of mistakes, I’ll never be as good as other dancers and it makes me feel bad. A few of the musicians, at a couple of the audience members and some of the dancers also makes sure I know of my mistakes or if “I walk funny” — all with the best of intentions, I’m sure. After years of listening to this, I stopped performing and I stopped dancing altogether.

But then the universe shows me that I can still enjoy dancing and set choreography without having to withstand a bunch of judgments. As a result, I’ve immersed myself in learning a bunch of set choreography to songs that are are cheesy and fun, but guess what? I’m not in my teens or in my 20’s anymore! Something’s got to give and I’ve been feeling it more and more in my knees.

So, here’s a little drawing and a little love to my precious knees. Please don’t give up on me! I need you.
